Five of the world’s top intelligence agencies say artificial intelligence is no longer a future worry. It is already reshaping how hackers attack, and businesses have only months to prepare, not years.

The warning came from the Five Eyes alliance, made up of intelligence agencies from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. In a joint statement published on Monday, the agencies said AI is rapidly transforming cyber risk and making attacks faster, bigger, and harder to stop.

The agencies also warned that newer, more advanced AI models are expected to go beyond what the industry currently expects. They said these models will fundamentally change both attack and defence capabilities, and stressed that organisations have months, not years, to get ready.

One of the strongest messages in the statement was aimed at company leaders and boards. The agencies said cyber resilience should no longer be treated as just a technical issue, since it now sits at the centre of keeping a business running and maintaining trust in the market.

They added that leaders who act quickly will reduce their exposure to risk, build stronger resilience, and earn more confidence from customers, partners, and investors, while those who wait around will face growing risks that could easily have been avoided.

Five Practical Steps Every Organisation Should Take

The agencies did not just warn, they also laid out five clear actions businesses and governments should take right away.

The first step is shrinking what hackers can actually reach. This means cutting off unnecessary system access and isolating systems that do not need to be exposed to the wider internet.

The second is speeding up how fast organisations patch security weaknesses. Because AI is shortening the gap between when a flaw is discovered and when it gets exploited, slow patching has become a much bigger risk, especially for older operational systems that take a long time to update.

Third, the agencies flagged old, outdated systems as a serious weak point. They described these legacy systems as more than just old technology gathering dust, calling them strategic liabilities that are easy targets for AI-powered attackers.

Fourth is strengthening how people log into systems. This includes enforcing strong authentication methods and regularly checking who has access to what.

Fifth is being ready for when an attack actually happens. This means testing response plans, training staff, and working under the assumption that a breach will eventually happen, so the focus shifts to containing damage quickly and recovering fast.

Fighting AI With AI

The agencies also pointed out that AI is not just a weapon for attackers. Organisations that build AI into their own security operations can spot weaknesses earlier, catch unusual behaviour faster, and respond to incidents more quickly, which lowers both the cost and damage of any breach.

The statement was direct about this point too, saying that since attackers are already using AI to move faster and more effectively, defenders need to do exactly the same.

The agencies were also clear that success in this new environment will not come from simply owning the most security tools. Instead, it comes down to getting the basics right, moving quickly, and weaving cybersecurity into the core of how a business operates.

Part of a Bigger Pattern of AI Warnings

This is not the first time a major player in tech has raised concerns about how fast AI is advancing. Earlier this month, Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI models, called on AI developers to create a coordinated system for slowing down or pausing AI development if future models start improving themselves faster than society can safely manage.

Anthropic warned that AI systems capable of building even more powerful versions of themselves could eventually weaken human oversight entirely, which is why it argued the industry needs to agree in advance on clear rules for when to hit pause.

This warning came from foreign intelligence agencies, but the risk it describes does not stop at any border. Nigerian banks, businesses, and government agencies rely on many of the same digital systems and software that are being targeted everywhere else in the world.
