MTN Nigeria has restored its XtraTime airtime lending service, bringing relief to millions of subscribers who depended on the feature before it was suspended.
The service allows eligible prepaid customers to borrow airtime or data and repay the amount when they recharge their lines. The service was suspended in April 2026 after new lending rules introduced by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) required telecom operators offering airtime and data advances to comply with a new regulatory framework. MTN paused XtraTime while it worked through the required compliance process.
For many subscribers, the return of XtraTime is welcome news. The service has become an important backup for people who suddenly run out of airtime or data and need to make urgent calls, access banking apps, or stay connected to work and family.
The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) had earlier warned that the suspension affected millions of users across the country. The group argued that airtime borrowing has grown beyond a simple telecom service and has become an important tool that many Nigerians rely on during emergencies.
During the suspension, rival operators including Airtel and Globacom restored their own airtime lending services after the FCCPC paused enforcement of the regulations while the legal dispute continued. MTN subscribers, however, had to wait longer before XtraTime finally returned.

The FCCPC has maintained that the regulations were introduced to improve transparency and consumer protection in Nigeria’s growing digital lending market. The commission later suspended enforcement of the rules pending the outcome of a court case challenging parts of the regulations.
With XtraTime now back, eligible MTN customers can once again borrow airtime or data whenever they meet the service requirements. The restoration is expected to make it easier for subscribers to stay connected, especially when they cannot recharge immediately.
The return of XtraTime marks the end of months of uncertainty for many MTN subscribers. While the legal and regulatory discussions continue, customers can once again access one of the network’s most popular value-added services, giving them a reliable option whenever they need emergency airtime or data.
