Nigeria’s internet infrastructure has reached another major milestone after the Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN) announced that it has crossed 2 terabits per second (Tbps) in peak internet traffic. The achievement shows the country’s growing internet use and the increasing amount of data being exchanged within Nigeria instead of being routed through overseas networks.
IXPN said the new record reflects the rapid growth of Nigeria’s digital economy. The organisation now connects more than 130 networks through its platform, allowing internet service providers, mobile operators, cloud companies, and content platforms to exchange traffic locally. This helps improve internet speed, lower delays, and reduce the cost of carrying local internet traffic.
The latest milestone comes just months after IXPN celebrated reaching 1Tbps in peak traffic. The jump to more than 2Tbps highlights the rising demand for online services such as video streaming, cloud computing, fintech, online education, and social media across Nigeria.
Keeping more internet traffic inside Nigeria has several benefits. When local data no longer needs to travel through international networks, websites and apps load faster, internet providers spend less on international bandwidth, and users enjoy a better online experience. Live statistics published by IXPN also show peak traffic reaching 2.5Tbps, underlining the strong growth in local internet activity.
