Meta has launched its own AI image generator, and unlike most AI image tools that require visiting a separate website or downloading a new app, this one lives inside platforms most Nigerians already use every day.
Muse Image, announced on July 7, 2026, is the first AI image generation model built entirely in-house by Meta Superintelligence Labs, the dedicated AI research unit Meta launched earlier this year. The model is now available for free inside Meta AI, powers more than 30 new AI effects on Instagram Stories, and enables image generation directly inside WhatsApp chats in select countries, with Facebook and Messenger support coming soon.

Most AI image generators, like Midjourney or Adobe Firefly, require users to visit a separate platform and learn how the tool works from scratch. Muse Image’s biggest advantage is not necessarily that it is the most powerful model available. It is that it shows up where people already spend their time.
Meta has previously relied on third-party AI models from companies like Midjourney and Black Forest Labs to power image features inside its apps. Muse Image changes that by replacing those third-party tools with a model Meta built and controls entirely.
Muse Image is the second major release from Meta Superintelligence Labs, led by Alexandr Wang, following the April launch of Muse Spark, the large language model that replaced Meta’s previous Llama family of models.
The tool is built around conversational prompts, meaning users describe what they want in plain language rather than using complex technical commands.
Starting from scratch, users can generate entirely new images based on a text description. For editing existing photos, the tool can remove unwanted people or objects from the background of a shot, redesign a room using products found online or from Facebook Marketplace, and transform a photo into a different artistic style like claymation or retro 16-bit graphics.
Users can also ask Muse Image to mock up an image of themselves in front of a historical landmark, write a custom prompt to build a functional QR code, or create detailed infographics where the text comes out legible and styled to match the visual.
The model also renders text cleanly inside visuals, which has historically been a weakness of AI image generators.
For users who struggle to come up with prompts, Meta AI now includes a presets panel featuring suggested prompts, allowing users to restore old family photographs, experiment with trending hairstyles, or transform images into artistic styles without having to write detailed prompts from scratch.
Not everything about this launch went smoothly. When Muse Image launched, it included a feature allowing users to tag public Instagram accounts and incorporate photos from those profiles into AI-generated images. The feature was opt-out by default, meaning a user’s public photos could be used by others unless they actively turned it off.
The backlash was swift. Meta acknowledged the feedback directly, saying the feature missed the mark, and removed it on July 10, 2026, just three days after launch.
This is not the first time Meta has faced pushback over how it handles user images. The company paid a record $5 billion fine to the FTC in 2019 over data misuse connected to Cambridge Analytica, and shut down Facebook’s facial recognition system in 2021 under regulatory pressure. The opt-out default on the photo-tagging feature fit a pattern critics have flagged repeatedly with Meta’s approach to user data.
Meta’s own benchmark tests show Muse Image trailing OpenAI’s GPT Image 2 model but outperforming Google’s Nano Banana 2 model across tasks including editing both single and multiple images.
In simple terms, Muse Image is not the best AI image model available right now. But it is free, already inside apps billions of people use, and good enough for everyday creative tasks.
For Nigerian content creators, social media managers, and small business owners who rely on Instagram and WhatsApp for marketing, this tool could make a real practical difference. Creating product mockups, promotional graphics, edited photos, and even functional QR codes for business use no longer requires paying for a separate design tool or hiring a designer for basic tasks.
The advertising angle is also significant. Muse Image will power advertiser-specific image generation tools as part of Meta’s AI-powered Advantage Plus service, letting brands develop ad creative more easily and automate certain tasks. Meta said advertisers and agencies can expect to see image variants powered by Muse Image in the coming weeks.
For a Nigerian small business already running ads on Facebook or Instagram, this could lower the cost and effort of producing multiple ad variations for testing.
Meta also previewed Muse Video, a video generation model coming soon to Meta AI, built on the same foundation as Muse Image and with native audio support. A public release date has not been confirmed yet.
Muse Image is also expected to expand to Facebook and Messenger later this year. Whether Meta will make Muse Image available to outside developers through an API has not been decided yet, and developers still do not have access to Muse Spark either, though Meta says API access to Spark is coming soon.
The real story with Muse Image is not that Meta built an AI image tool. Plenty of companies have done that. The story is that Meta put it directly inside the apps where billions of people already create, share, and advertise every day. For Nigerian users on WhatsApp and Instagram, that means a genuinely useful creative tool is now available at no extra cost, sitting quietly inside the apps already open on your phone.
