If you have ever worried about what would happen to your money if your phone got stolen or you were forced to make a transfer against your will, OPay just gave you a way to fight back. The fintech company has introduced two new security features called Emergency Lock and Safety PIN, built to give customers more control over their accounts during dangerous or unexpected moments. The new features are designed to help users protect their funds before fraud, theft, or coercion can happen, rather than only helping them recover money after it is already gone.

For millions of Nigerians, digital payments are now part of daily life. But phone theft, robbery, account hacking, and forced transfers remain real dangers many people face. OPay says these new tools were created specifically to give customers a way to act fast in those critical moments.

The first feature, Emergency Lock, lets you instantly freeze your OPay account with a single tap the moment you sense danger or believe your account might be at risk. Whether you notice something suspicious happening, find yourself somewhere unfamiliar, or simply want extra peace of mind, activating Emergency Lock freezes your account immediately for 24 hours. During that time, every outgoing transaction is blocked, including transfers, bill payments, and card transactions.

Here is the part that makes this feature genuinely useful in an emergency. Once Emergency Lock is activated, nobody can remove it before the 24 hours are up, not you, and not even OPay’s own customer service team. This means if someone steals your phone and tries to pressure you into unlocking your account early, it simply cannot be done.

The second feature, Safety PIN, solves a different kind of problem. It is built for situations where someone might force you to make a transfer or payment against your will, like during a robbery.

Here’s how it works. You set up a unique Safety PIN in advance. If you ever find yourself in a threatening situation where someone demands you transfer money, you simply enter that Safety PIN instead of your normal one. The system then quietly triggers the same 24-hour account freeze in the background, without anyone around you realizing what just happened. This discreet design matters a lot. It means you can protect your money without escalating a dangerous situation by openly refusing or arguing with whoever is threatening you.

Most financial security tools in the past have focused on helping you recover money after something has already gone wrong. OPay’s approach here is different. Both Emergency Lock and Safety PIN are built to stop the loss before it happens, not clean up after it.

Dotun Adekunle, OPay’s Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technology Officer, said every innovation at the company starts with one question: how can customers be better protected and served. He explained that Emergency Lock and Safety PIN were built around real situations many Nigerians face daily, and are meant to give customers immediate control over their finances during moments of uncertainty. He added that financial services should not just be convenient, but should also bring confidence, security, and peace of mind.

Setting up either feature does not require anything complicated. Customers can find Emergency Lock by going to the Security Centre inside the OPay app and selecting it from there. The Safety PIN can be set up the same way, directly within the Security Centre. It is worth setting both of these up in advance, before you ever actually need them, since the whole point is being ready before a crisis happens, not scrambling to figure it out during one.

OPay was established in Nigeria in 2018 with a mission to make financial services more inclusive through technology. The company offers services including money transfers, bill payments, card services, airtime and data purchases, and merchant payments. OPay is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and insured by the NDIC, with the same insurance coverage given to traditional commercial banks.

Nobody plans for a robbery or a stolen phone, which is exactly why having a plan in place beforehand counts for so much. Taking a few minutes now to set up Emergency Lock and Safety PIN inside your OPay app could be the difference between losing everything in your account and walking away with your money still intact.
