Nigeria’s national ICT infrastructure agency is preparing to digitally transform 54 police stations across the country, building on a pilot deployment that has already reshaped how officers in Gombe State operate.

Galaxy Backbone Limited, known as GBB, disclosed the planned expansion in its Integrated Digital Transformation Strategy Quarterly Newsletter for the second quarter of 2026, which was seen by Technology Times. The newsletter confirms that the agency’s Smart Police Station initiative, piloted successfully in Gombe State, is now ready to move from experiment to national scale.

The concept behind a Smart Police Station is straightforward. It takes a traditional police facility, where most records are kept on paper, information sharing is slow, and connectivity is limited or nonexistent, and upgrades it with digital tools that change how officers work.

According to GBB, Smart Police Stations are designed to modernise police operations through digital tools, improved connectivity, and electronic record-keeping. This combination enables faster access to information and more coordinated responses to incidents, addressing longstanding problems around connectivity gaps, poor information sharing, and weak operational coordination across police formations.

In practical terms, this means officers at a smart station can access records electronically rather than searching through physical files, communicate more efficiently with other units, and process information about incidents in real time rather than logging it days later on paper.

Before committing to 54 additional stations, GBB tested the concept in Gombe State. The agency described that pilot as successful and said it provides a tested model for scaling technology-enabled policing to other locations across Nigeria.

GBB said the Gombe deployment expanded its contribution to national security infrastructure during the second quarter, and that the planned expansion reinforces the agency’s commitment to deploying technology that improves public safety and operational effectiveness.

The pilot-first approach is significant. Rather than immediately rolling out an untested system to dozens of police commands simultaneously, GBB used Gombe to work out the implementation details before scaling. That reduces the risk of deploying expensive infrastructure that fails to integrate with how officers actually work on the ground.

The Smart Police Station expansion is not a standalone project. It is one piece of a much wider portfolio of digital infrastructure work GBB is pursuing under the Federal Government’s Integrated Digital Transformation Strategy.

During the same quarter in which the police station expansion was announced, GBB also reported progress on a sovereign cloud partnership with Oracle and Bluechip Technologies, completion of user acceptance testing for a Government Services Portal, and the launch of a pilot digital identity and authentication platform developed with Roundstone Consulting.

Together, these projects reflect GBB’s mandate to build shared digital infrastructure for public institutions rather than allowing each government agency to develop its own isolated technology systems. The idea is that a common infrastructure foundation, whether for cloud computing, identity management, or police operations, is more efficient, more secure, and more sustainable than fragmented approaches built separately by different agencies.

Technology alone does not transform institutions. GBB appears to understand this. Alongside the physical infrastructure projects, the agency reported that over 430 civil and public servants received training in artificial intelligence and cybersecurity during the second quarter of 2026. Preparations are also underway for an AI Readiness Programme expected to reach more than 1,000 public servants.

For the Smart Police Station initiative specifically, ensuring that officers assigned to digitally upgraded stations can actually use the new tools effectively is as important as the hardware and software being installed.

GBB has not yet disclosed when the 54 additional Smart Police Stations will become operational, which states or specific police commands are included in the next phase, or what the total budget for the expansion is. These are important details that will shape how quickly the initiative delivers its promised benefits to Nigerian communities.

The agency also acknowledged that the effectiveness of the rollout will ultimately depend on reliable connectivity, ongoing maintenance, user training, and the ability of police commands to integrate the technology into their everyday operations. In many parts of Nigeria, connectivity remains inconsistent, which could affect how well a digital policing system functions in the locations where it is most needed.

Smart Police Stations represent a meaningful bet on technology as a driver of institutional reform. If the 54 planned stations deliver what GBB’s Gombe pilot demonstrated, the initiative could give Nigerian communities noticeably better policed neighbourhoods, faster incident response, and more accountable record-keeping. If connectivity gaps, maintenance failures, or inadequate training prevent the tools from being used properly, the investment risks becoming expensive hardware that sits underutilised.

The gap between a successful pilot and a successful national rollout is where many government technology initiatives in Nigeria have struggled before. GBB’s quarterly report signals the ambition is real. The 54 stations will be the test of whether the execution can match it.
