Why Your Imported Phone Won’t Show 4G in Nigeria

A phone can say 4G LTE on the box and still never connect to it here. Here is how to check your phone's bands against Nigerian networks before you buy or after.

Band 3, the LTE frequency at 1800 MHz, carries 4G traffic for more Nigerian subscribers than any other. A phone whose radio doesn’t cover it will connect to a Nigerian network, make calls, send messages and browse, and it will do all of that on 3G no matter how many times the owner resets the network settings or swaps the SIM.

That’s the part the box never mentions. Manufacturers build regional versions of the same model with different radio hardware, so a phone sold in Texas and a phone sold in Lagos can share a name, a processor and a camera while receiving completely different frequencies. The 4G LTE printed on the packaging is accurate in both cases. It simply describes a capability that only activates on frequencies the phone was built to hear, and Nigerian networks may not be transmitting on any of them.

The frequencies Nigerian networks are actually using

Bands are numbered, and each number maps to a frequency range. Band 3 sits at 1800 MHz and does the heavy lifting for several Nigerian operators. Band 20 at 800 MHz and Band 7 at 2600 MHz have both been deployed here, Glo has used Band 28 at 700 MHz, and the fixed-wireless providers such as Spectranet and Swift run on Band 40 at 2300 MHz, which is why a MiFi and a phone in the same room can behave nothing alike.

The physics matter as much as the numbers. Lower frequencies travel further and pass through walls more easily, so a phone with Band 20 will often hold a signal indoors where a Band 7 device drops to 3G. Higher frequencies carry more data but over shorter distances, which is why urban speeds can be excellent while the same phone struggles two streets away.

None of this is fixed. Operators refarm spectrum continually, moving frequencies off 2G and 3G as those networks wind down and onto 4G and 5G, and the Nigerian Communications Commission licenses and reallocates that spectrum as it goes. Any band list, including this one, describes a moment rather than a permanent arrangement, so the useful skill is checking rather than memorising.

Finding out what your phone can hear takes five minutes

Everything depends on your exact model number rather than the name on the front. Open Settings > About phone and find the model, which reads as a code rather than a friendly label. That code is what separates the version built for one market from the version built for another, and it’s the step most people skip.

Search that code on GSMArena and read the network section, which lists LTE bands separately for each variant. If Band 3 is absent, that’s your explanation, and it’s a hardware limitation rather than a setting. To see which band you’re connected to at this moment rather than which ones the phone theoretically supports, an app like Network Cell Info Lite reads the connection data Android already holds and shows it plainly.

Before concluding the hardware is wrong, though, there are cheaper explanations worth eliminating.

  1. Confirm your SIM is 4G-enabled, since older SIMs need swapping and networks do it free at a service centre.
  2. Open Settings > Network and internet > SIMs > Preferred network type and check it isn’t limited to 3G.
  3. Check whether 4G reaches where you are, because coverage thins considerably outside the cities.
  4. On a dual-SIM phone, move the SIM to the other slot, since many models enable 4G on one slot only.

That last one resolves more cases than you’d expect, and it costs nothing to try before you go any further down this road.

Where imported phones go wrong

Phones sold officially in Nigeria by Tecno, Infinix, itel and Samsung carry the bands Nigerian networks run on, because that’s the market they were built and certified for. American-market phones are where the trouble concentrates, since US carriers use band combinations that overlap poorly with ours, and carrier-locked variants narrow the radio further still.

Price comparisons between a Dubai listing and a Lagos shop rarely account for any of this, which is how a genuinely good phone arrives here and turns into a 3G handset. Ask any seller for the model number and check the bands yourself before money moves. If the phone you own is already the wrong one

Bands live in the radio chip, so nothing installed on the phone can add one that isn’t physically there. Apps and modified firmware sold as band unlockers do nothing useful and can leave you with a device that no longer boots, which is a worse position than the one you started in.

Switching networks is the one route that sometimes works, because operators don’t all run identical bands in every area. If your phone covers Band 3 but your current network is using something else where you live, another SIM may find 4G where yours can’t. Borrow one from a friend and test it before committing to a port, since the answer takes minutes to establish and porting doesn’t.

A phone stuck on 3G still works for messaging and most browsing, though video and large downloads will test your patience.
