Airtel Africa has announced that it saved 9.1 million litres of diesel after connecting 390 telecom sites to grid electricity. The company said the move is part of its plan to reduce fuel consumption, lower operating costs and improve environmental sustainability across its network.
The telecom operator explained that many of its base stations previously relied heavily on diesel-powered generators because of limited access to reliable electricity. By switching hundreds of sites to grid power, Airtel Africa has reduced its dependence on diesel while improving the efficiency of its network operations.

According to the company, the initiative also helped reduce carbon emissions. Using less diesel means fewer greenhouse gases are released into the environment, supporting Airtel Africa’s environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals and its commitment to more sustainable business operations.
Airtel Africa said the project forms part of a wider strategy to modernise its network and improve energy efficiency across the countries where it operates. The company continues to invest in cleaner energy solutions, including greater use of grid electricity and renewable energy where possible.
The company noted that reducing fuel consumption can also lower operating expenses. Savings from lower diesel use can support continued investment in network expansion, better service quality and improved connectivity for millions of customers across Africa.
