The Federal Government has warned that the rapid growth of digital technology is making it easier for misinformation to spread across Nigeria. It says fake news and misleading content are becoming more common on digital platforms, creating risks for public trust, national security and social stability.
The warning was given by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, at a public event focused on media and digital communication. He said while digital technology has improved access to information, it has also made it easier for false stories to reach millions of people within minutes.
According to the minister, misinformation can influence public opinion, cause confusion during national emergencies and weaken confidence in public institutions. He urged Nigerians to verify information before sharing it and to rely on credible news sources for important updates.
The minister also stressed the need for stronger media and digital literacy. He said teaching people how to identify false or misleading information will help reduce the spread of fake news and encourage more responsible use of digital platforms.
The Federal Government called on technology companies, media organisations, schools and civil society groups to work together in tackling misinformation. The minister said fighting fake news requires a shared effort from everyone involved in Nigeria’s digital space.

He added that responsible use of digital technology is important as Nigeria continues to expand internet access and adopt new technologies, including artificial intelligence. While innovation brings many benefits, he said it must be supported by ethical practices and accurate information.
