An MTN network outage hit subscribers in parts of Lagos, Oyo, Rivers, Delta and the FCT on Thursday, 8 October, and MTN confirmed on its X account that some of its services “may be temporarily unavailable” in those areas. The operator said “our engineers are working to restore services as soon as possible”, but it didn’t say what caused the problem or give a time for full restoration.

If your MTN line has been showing poor or no service since Thursday evening, it’s most likely part of this disruption rather than a fault with your phone or SIM. Still, it’s worth running a couple of quick checks so you don’t waste time on settings that won’t help, and so you know what to do if the problem lingers after MTN says service is back.

Rule out your own phone before you blame the MTN outage

Start by switching on Airplane mode for about 30 seconds and then turning it off, which forces your phone to search for the network again. If someone near you on MTN has service and you don’t, the problem is more likely on your side, so restart the phone and reseat the SIM before you assume it’s the outage. If every MTN line around you is struggling while Airtel or Glo lines are fine, you’re dealing with the network fault, and fiddling with APN or network mode settings won’t fix it.

A second SIM is the quickest way to stay online

If your phone takes two SIMs and you have an Airtel, Glo or T2 line, move your mobile data to it until MTN is stable. On most Android phones you’ll find this under Settings > Network and internet > SIMs or Settings > SIM card & mobile data, where you can choose which line handles data. Tecno, Infinix and itel phones label it slightly differently depending on the HiOS, XOS or itelOS build, so search for “SIM” in Settings if you can’t find it.

Bank transfers and OTPs are where an outage hurts most. If your bank sends one-time codes only to your MTN number, check whether your banking app can approve transactions in-app instead, and hold off on transfers that depend on an SMS code until your line is stable, because codes can arrive late after service returns. When MTN is back, dial *310# to confirm your balance and bundles are where you left them.

Will this MTN outage count towards compensation?

Not automatically, and not straight away. Under the NCC’s compensation framework, credits are worked out from quality of service performance assessed LGA by LGA over a set period, so a single bad evening doesn’t trigger a payout on its own. Outages like this one feed into how an operator performs in those assessments, which is why MTN’s recent credits only covered failures from February to April. We explained how those amounts were worked out in our guide to MTN’s poor network compensation.

If your service doesn’t come back once MTN reports the problem fixed, complain to MTN first and keep the reference number it gives you. If that doesn’t resolve it, our guide on how to complain to the NCC walks you through escalating it. The practical aim for now is to keep a backup route for data and banking until MTN confirms the network is stable across all five areas.
