Samsung started pushing the stable Galaxy S23 One UI 9 update beyond South Korea on Monday, October 19, 2026, bringing Android 17 to the Galaxy S23, S23+ and S23 Ultra. Phones enrolled in the One UI 9 beta are getting it first, with Europe the first region to see it, and other countries are expected to follow in stages. For the many Nigerians carrying an S23 bought new or UK-used, this is also the last major Android version the phone is due to get.
The update first reached S23 units in Korea on October 14, and the version now going out internationally carries firmware S91xBXXUAGZIF with the October 2026 security patch. For beta testers moving to the stable build, the download is about 517MB. Samsung hasn’t published a date for Nigeria, so if nothing shows up on your phone today, that’s normal for a staged rollout rather than a sign your unit has been left out.

Why this Galaxy S23 update is the one to keep
When Samsung announced its update policy in February 2022, it promised up to four generations of One UI and Android upgrades for the Galaxy S22 line and “upcoming S series devices”, along with up to five years of security updates. The S23 launched in February 2023 on Android 13, and it has since moved through Android 14, 15 and 16. Android 17 is its fourth upgrade, which means One UI 9 is where the S23 stops getting new Android versions.
That doesn’t make the phone unsafe overnight. Security patches are a separate promise, and Samsung’s five-year window from the S23’s launch would keep them coming into early 2028 if the company sticks to it. What you lose after this is new Android features, so whatever One UI 9 brings is largely what your S23 will have for the rest of its life. If you’re weighing a UK-used S23 against a newer phone, that’s worth factoring into the price you’re willing to pay.
What actually changes on your S23 with One UI 9
The changes reported on the S23 build are practical rather than dramatic. The Quick Panel is more customisable, Samsung DeX and Samsung Notes get improvements, accessibility features have been expanded, and a location privacy indicator now shows when an app is using your location. Samsung also lists the Galaxy S23 and S23 FE among the phones that support Privacy Alerts in its official One UI 9 announcement.
Be careful with expectations around Galaxy AI, though. Samsung’s One UI 9 launch focused on the Galaxy S26 and its newest foldables, and not every feature announced there is confirmed for a three-year-old phone. Features such as My FanCam and the newer Now Brief cards may depend on hardware, region or account, so treat anything not listed above as unconfirmed for the S23 until it appears on your own device.
Before you tap install, protect your data and your files
Open Settings > Software update > Download and install to check manually. If the update appears, connect to Wi-Fi if you can, because the full package for phones that weren’t on the beta was close to 4GB in Korea, and a download that size can drain a monthly bundle quickly. If you’re relying on mobile data, our guide on finding out what’s eating your data on MTN, Airtel or Glo will help you plan around it.
Charge the phone above 50 percent, back up photos and chats first, and make sure you have a few gigabytes of free storage, since the installer needs room to unpack. If space is tight, here’s why your storage keeps filling up even after you delete files. Don’t install firmware files sent through WhatsApp groups or third-party sites, because a tampered package can leave the phone stuck or unusable. Our step-by-step on updating Android safely covers the rest.
If you own an S23 FE, keep waiting. It wasn’t part of the initial S23 rollout, and Samsung hasn’t given a firm date for its One UI 9 build. For everyone on the standard S23, S23+ or S23 Ultra, this is the update to take carefully and keep, because the next big Android version won’t be coming to your phone.
