Spotify launched lossless streaming in September 2025 and expanded it to more than 50 markets by that October, and Nigeria was not one of them. Nigerian Premium subscribers are still capped at Very High, which is 320kbps compressed audio, and threads on Spotify’s own community forum from this month have Nigerian users asking when it will arrive and getting no answer. Some have cancelled and moved to Apple Music over it.
That changes the entire comparison for anyone reading this in Nigeria. The service that made lossless free is the one you cannot get it on, while both of its rivals have offered it here for years. Tidal in particular sells into Nigeria at one of the lowest prices anywhere in the world, which almost nobody realises.
What each service actually gives you if you are subscribing from Nigeria
Apple Music includes lossless at 16-bit/44.1kHz and Hi-Res Lossless up to 24-bit/192kHz on every subscription at no extra charge, along with Dolby Atmos spatial audio, and all of it works normally in Nigeria. Apple made that move in 2021 and never charged for it, which is a large part of why Spotify eventually had to respond.
Tidal is available in Nigeria and has been since 2021. It simplified its plans in 2025, removing the old HiFi Plus tier and making hi-res FLAC standard across every subscription, so the tier confusion in older articles no longer applies. Nigerian pricing is the striking part, since Tidal costs around two and a half dollars a month here against roughly eleven in the United States. For a service positioned as the audiophile option, that is unusually accessible.
Spotify gives Nigerian users 320kbps Ogg Vorbis on Premium and nothing better. The company has also started restructuring its plans in some markets, with a three-tier Lite, Standard and Platinum layout rolled out in five countries including South Africa, where lossless sits behind the most expensive tier. If that structure reaches Nigeria, lossless may arrive as a paid upgrade rather than as part of Premium.
Bluetooth earbuds cancel most of this before you hear it
Bluetooth compresses audio, and there is no way around it. Whether your earbuds use SBC, AAC, aptX or LDAC, the signal is re-encoded on its way to your ears, so a lossless file arrives at your earbuds having been compressed anyway. LDAC and aptX Adaptive get closer than SBC does, though none of them deliver a genuinely lossless signal over a standard Bluetooth connection.
This applies to AirPods too, which surprises people. Apple sells lossless on Apple Music and its own wireless earbuds cannot receive it, so an AirPods user streaming Hi-Res Lossless is hearing AAC. If you listen through any Bluetooth earbuds, which describes most people, the difference between 320kbps and lossless is largely theoretical for you. Wired headphones with a decent DAC, or a wired connection to a proper amplifier, are what make the format change audible.
Lossless costs about three times the data, and that matters here
CD-quality FLAC runs at roughly 1,000kbps against Spotify’s 320kbps, so an hour of listening moves from around 150MB to somewhere near 450MB. Hi-res tracks at 24-bit/192kHz go far higher again. Spotify’s own app shows you the data-per-hour figure when lossless is switched on, which tells you the company knows this is a real consideration.
On a Nigerian mobile bundle that is the difference between a plan lasting a month and lasting ten days. Both Apple Music and Tidal let you set streaming quality separately for mobile data and Wi-Fi, and the sensible arrangement is high quality on Wi-Fi with downloads for anything you listen to repeatedly, and standard quality on mobile data. The recording matters more than the service does
A track mastered at CD quality does not become more detailed because you streamed it in a hi-res container. Plenty of catalogue music, including a great deal of Afrobeats, was mastered for compressed streaming and mixed loud to suit it, so the extra bit depth carries no additional information. Hi-res only means anything when the original master had the detail in the first place.
Where you listen matters nearly as much. In a car, on a bus, or anywhere with traffic noise, the room and the road are doing far more damage to the sound than the codec is. Hearing plays a part too, since sensitivity in the higher frequencies declines with age and a good number of people cannot reliably tell 16-bit from 24-bit under any conditions.
What to actually pick if you are in Nigeria
If you use Bluetooth earbuds and listen mostly while moving around, stay on whatever you already have and save your money, because none of this will reach you. Spotify’s 320kbps is genuinely good and its recommendations and playlists remain the strongest reason to use it.
If you own wired headphones and care about the difference, Tidal is the obvious pick right now given what it costs here and the fact that hi-res comes standard on every plan. Apple Music is the better all-round choice for anyone already inside the Apple ecosystem, since lossless and Dolby Atmos are included and the integration across devices is cleaner. Neither of them requires you to abandon Spotify entirely, and running Spotify for discovery alongside one of the others for serious listening is a reasonable arrangement.
The honest summary is that lossless is the smallest variable in how your music sounds. Your headphones matter more, your listening environment matters more, and the mastering of the record matters more than all of it. Spotify not offering lossless in Nigeria is a fair complaint and worth raising with them, though it is unlikely to be the reason your music sounds the way it does.
