Microsoft released Windows 11 26H2, which it’s calling the Windows 11 2026 Update, on 29 September 2026, and it reaches PCs already running version 24H2 or 25H2 as a small enablement package that installs with a single restart. The rollout is phased, so it won’t appear on every laptop at once, but you can ask for it today from Windows Update.
Most Windows 11 laptops and desktops in Nigeria are on 24H2 or 25H2 right now, and for the first group the timing matters, because support for 24H2 Home and Pro ends on 13 October. The good news is that you don’t need to download a full copy of Windows or reinstall anything. Start with the checks below, because they’ll tell you which version you’re on and whether the update is already waiting for you.

Check which Windows 11 version your PC runs before anything else
Open Settings > System > About and scroll to Windows specifications. The line marked Version will say 24H2, 25H2 or, on a small number of newer machines, 26H1. You can also press the Windows key, type winver and press Enter for the same answer in a small window.
If you see 24H2 or 25H2, you’re eligible. If you see 26H1, you won’t get this update at all, because Microsoft says devices on that version have a different path to a future Windows release. That mostly affects some newer laptops that shipped with 26H1 installed, and nothing is wrong with them. How to get Windows 11 26H2 from Windows Update
Go to Settings > Windows Update and turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available. Then select Check for updates. If your PC is ready, you’ll see an option to download and install Windows 11, version 26H2. Select it, let it finish, and restart when Windows asks. Microsoft says a single restart completes the process, and on an up-to-date PC it usually takes minutes rather than the hour or more that older feature updates needed.
If the option doesn’t appear yet, don’t force it. Microsoft releases feature updates in waves and holds some PCs back when it knows about a driver or app conflict. Install any pending cumulative updates first, because 26H2 builds on them, then check again over the next few days. You can confirm the change afterwards in Settings > System > About.
Why a small download matters if you’re on mobile data
Because 26H2 is an enablement package, most of its features were already delivered to your PC through the monthly updates of the past year, and the package simply switches them on. Microsoft describes it as a minimal download, which is welcome if you’re updating over an MTN, Airtel, Glo or T2 hotspot or a MiFi rather than fibre. That said, a PC that has skipped several monthly updates will pull those in first, and that part can be large.
If your data is limited, open Settings > Network and internet > Wi-Fi, select your network’s properties and turn on Metered connection. Windows will then hold back most large downloads on that network. Be careful with Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Download updates over metered connections, because leaving it on lets Windows use your data plan freely. Switch it on only when you’re ready to update and have enough data.
What actually changes on your desktop after 26H2
Don’t expect a new-looking Windows. Microsoft says 26H2 brings together the improvements, security fixes and features delivered to Windows 11 over the past year, including changes to the Start menu, taskbar, File Explorer, Windows Search and accessibility tools. If your 25H2 PC has been updating monthly, you’ve probably seen most of these already. The real gain is the support window, since 26H2 restarts the clock at 24 months for Home and Pro, so a PC updated now stays covered well into 2028.
Microsoft’s 26H2 known issues page lists a few problems it has already mitigated. The one most home users could notice involves some older USB audio devices, such as certain headsets and USB sound cards, failing to start with a Code 10 error or producing no sound. What to do first if your laptop is still on 24H2
If you’re on 24H2, treat this as the update to install before 13 October, since it skips 25H2 entirely and lands you on the version with the longest support ahead.
