WhatsApp introduced four changes to group chats on October 29, 2026, letting members pin a message with no expiry date, post a WhatsApp group status that only one group can see, send recent chat history to people who joined after it was posted, and filter unread groups down to the ones where someone mentioned or replied to them. The company announced them in a post on the official WhatsApp blog, and they arrive through the normal app update rather than as a separate download.
If you manage a class, church, alumni or estate group, the pinning change fixes a small chore that comes back every month. Until now, a pinned message could stay up for 30 days at most, so an account number for dues, a timetable or a meeting link had to be pinned again once it expired. WhatsApp hasn’t said when Nigerian accounts will see the new options, and reports suggest the rollout will be staged over the coming weeks, so they may not appear in your app straight away.
| Announced | 29 October 2026 |
|---|---|
| Pinned messages | Can stay pinned with no expiry |
| Group status | Seen only by that group, disappears after 24 hours |
| Chat history | Can be sent to members after they join, still end-to-end encrypted |
| New chat filter | Unread groups where you were mentioned or replied to, including @all |
| Launch Price | Free |
| Rollout in Nigeria | Not confirmed |
That dues account number can finally stay pinned all year
WhatsApp says the update lets you “keep important messages pinned forever”, which means you no longer have to pick 24 hours, seven days or 30 days when you pin something. The message stays at the top of the chat until someone removes it or pins something else in its place. For long-running groups, that’s the difference between a rules message that’s always one tap away and one that quietly disappears while nobody is watching.
Because a permanent pin is the first thing every member sees, it’s worth checking who in your group is allowed to change it. Depending on your group settings, members who aren’t admins may be able to pin messages too, so admins handling contributions should look at the group’s permissions and remind members to confirm payment details with an admin directly before sending money.
Group status keeps a post inside one chat instead of your whole contact list
Regular WhatsApp Status goes to your contacts, filtered by whatever privacy setting you’ve chosen. The new group status works differently, because the update is shared with one specific group, and every member of that group can view it, react to it and add a status of their own. WhatsApp confirms “they disappear after 24 hours”, just like normal Status.
That gives you a way to share pictures from a class reunion with the people who were there, or a progress photo with a fitness group, without the post landing in front of your boss, your landlord or your extended family. It also takes some pressure off busy chats, since casual updates can sit in the group’s status instead of pushing important messages out of view.
New members can catch up without anyone forwarding screenshots
WhatsApp already lets you switch on history sharing when you add someone to a group. The update extends that to people who have already joined, and WhatsApp says you can send them recent messages “just by tapping their name in the chat”. The shared messages stay end-to-end encrypted, and sharing is optional, so a group that prefers newcomers to start fresh doesn’t have to change anything.
A filter for the messages that actually involve you
The fourth change is a chat filter that shows every unread group conversation where you were mentioned or got a direct reply, and it includes messages sent with @all. If you’re in dozens of groups, that lets you clear the ones that need an answer first and leave the rest for later. It narrows your chat list but doesn’t summarise anything, so you still have to open each chat to see what was said.
The same blog post points to three group tools that already exist but are easy to miss. You can reply privately to one member so a side conversation doesn’t take over the group, turn off Allow multiple answers when creating a poll so everyone picks only one option, and set a member tag that tells each group who you are, such as “Treasurer” in one chat and a parent’s role in another.
Get these features from the official app only
Open Google Play or the App Store, search for WhatsApp and install any pending update. If the new options don’t show up after updating, wait a few days and check again, because staged rollouts reach accounts at different times. Modified apps that promise these tools early aren’t a shortcut worth taking, for the reasons we set out in our look at whether GBWhatsApp Pro is safe, and the official app has been adding features steadily, including guest calling for people without an account earlier this month.
When the update reaches your phone, group admins get the quickest win by pinning the one message members keep asking for, choosing no expiry and tightening who can replace it. Members get the bigger everyday benefit from the mentions filter, which turns a crowded chat list into a short list of conversations waiting on you.
