OpenAI said on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, that ChatGPT ads are expanding to 26 more countries, and Nigeria is on the list alongside South Africa, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Ukraine, Serbia, Cambodia and a group of Latin American markets that includes Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru. The ads run only on the Free and Go plans, so most Nigerians who use ChatGPT without paying for Plus will start seeing labelled sponsored units under some answers as the rollout reaches their accounts.
This takes ChatGPT advertising to 89 countries, a little over eight months after OpenAI began testing ads in the US on February 9. In its announcement, the company said more than 100,000 advertisers have already run campaigns and that ChatGPT now has over 1.2 billion weekly users. It also repeated that “advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides”, which is the promise that matters most if you lean on the free app for assignments, job applications or deciding which phone to buy.

Where the sponsored boxes will sit in your chats
OpenAI’s help centre page on ads in ChatGPT says an ad appears below a response as a labelled unit that can carry one or more images. There’s also a separate multi-image format that shows while ChatGPT is generating a picture, kept apart from the image itself. Temporary Chats don’t carry ads at all, so that mode is now ad-free as well as history-free.
Some conversations are off limits to advertisers. OpenAI says ads aren’t eligible to appear near sensitive topics such as personal health, mental health or politics, and political advertising isn’t allowed for now. Accounts identified as belonging to someone under 18 don’t get ads either, based on account details and OpenAI’s age prediction where it’s available. That protection depends on the account being recognised as a teenager’s, which is worth knowing if a younger sibling uses ChatGPT for exam revision with Study Mode for UTME and WAEC practice on an account you opened for them.
Advertisers won’t read your chats, but your chats can pick the ads
OpenAI states that “We do not share your conversations with ChatGPT with advertisers, and we never sell your data to advertisers.” Brands get aggregated figures such as views and clicks. The exception is when you message a business directly through its ad, because that business then sees the messages you send it, so handle that chat the way you’d handle a WhatsApp conversation with a vendor you found on Instagram.
Personalisation is a separate setting. With it on, ChatGPT can choose ads using the chat you’re in, how you’ve interacted with earlier ads and, if you allow it, your past chats and memory. You’ll find the switches under Settings > Ad controls, where Personalize ads and Past chats and memory each have a toggle. Turning personalisation off doesn’t remove ads, since they’ll still be matched to the current conversation, but your other threads and ad history stop being used. The same screen lets you view and clear your ad history, and the three-dot menu on each ad lets you hide or report it.
Free users can go ad-free, but they pay for it in messages
OpenAI’s help centre describes an Ads-Free option for Free accounts, chosen from the same Ad controls page. The trade is real, because your message limits drop and some tools, including image generation and deep research, stop working until you switch ads back on. Go subscribers can’t pick that option directly and would have to move down to Free first. OpenAI hasn’t said whether every control arrives in Nigeria on the same day as the ads, so check that menu once you see your first sponsored unit.
If you’d rather keep full limits and no ads, Plus and Pro stay ad-free. Prices depend on the plan and on whether you pay on the web or through an app store, so check the plan page inside ChatGPT for the amount you’ll actually be charged before upgrading just to escape a few sponsored boxes.
Nigerian brands now have a new place to buy attention
The other half of this news is for businesses. OpenAI says advertisers can buy through technology partners or self-serve through its Ads Manager, and it plans more ad formats, buying options and measurement tools. OpenAI hasn’t published Nigerian pricing or audience figures, and regulated categories such as health and financial services face extra conditions and still can’t appear next to sensitive personal conversations. A fintech or school planning its first ChatGPT campaign should start with a small budget and compare the results with what it already gets from Meta and Google, which is also chasing small business owners with its new Gemini business hub.
For everyday users, the one setting to look at this week is Past chats and memory under Ad controls. Switch it off if you share your ChatGPT account with anyone or have used it for anything personal, because that toggle decides whether old conversations can shape the ads you see from now on.
