A contact not showing in WhatsApp on Android is usually down to one of four things: WhatsApp hasn’t refreshed since you saved the number, it doesn’t have permission to read your contacts, the number is saved in a format WhatsApp can’t match, or the person simply isn’t using WhatsApp on that number anymore. Most of the time you can sort it out in under a minute without reinstalling anything.
In Nigeria, the problem often shows up after moving to a new Tecno, Infinix, itel or Samsung phone, after a contact changes their SIM, or when a number was saved with a stray space or the wrong country code. The good news is that you don’t need to delete WhatsApp or touch your chat backup to fix it. Start with the checks below, because they go from the quickest fix to the more involved ones.
Refresh your WhatsApp contact list first
WhatsApp on Android doesn’t always notice a new contact the moment you save it, especially if the phone’s battery saver has been restricting it in the background. Open WhatsApp, tap the New chat button at the bottom right of the Chats tab, then tap the three-dot menu at the top and choose Refresh. Give it a few seconds, then search for the person again.
If the contact appears after a refresh, nothing was wrong with your phone. WhatsApp just hadn’t checked your address book yet, and you can expect this again whenever you save a number and try to message it straight away.
Check that WhatsApp is allowed to read your contacts
WhatsApp can only show people it’s allowed to see in your phone’s address book. If you tapped Don’t allow during setup, or a cleaner app or phone update reset the permission, your chats will still open but names may turn into plain numbers and new contacts won’t appear at all.
Open Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Permissions > Contacts and set it to Allow. On Tecno and Infinix phones the path is often Settings > App management > App list > WhatsApp > Permissions, and if your menu is different, long-press the WhatsApp icon, tap the small i button, then open Permissions. If it’s already allowed, switch it off and back on, then run the refresh from the first step.
The way you saved the number can hide the contact
WhatsApp matches the number in your phone book against numbers registered on WhatsApp, so the digits have to line up exactly. A Nigerian number saved as 0803 123 4567 normally works because WhatsApp reads it using your own country code. The trouble starts when your WhatsApp is registered on a foreign number, because WhatsApp will then read 0803 as a number in that other country and won’t find the person.
The safest format is the full international one, which means a plus sign, the country code, and the number without its leading zero. For a Nigerian line that looks like +234 803 123 4567. Open the contact in your phone’s Contacts app, edit the number to that format, save it, and refresh WhatsApp again. While you’re there, check for letters, extra digits or a missing digit, because a number copied from a flyer or a WhatsApp status often picks up mistakes.
Numbers from outside Nigeria need their own country code too. A Ghanaian number starts with +233 and a UK number with +44, so saving them without it means WhatsApp will treat them as Nigerian numbers and they won’t show.
Make sure the contact is actually on your phone, not just in the cloud
WhatsApp reads contacts that are already stored on the phone. If you’ve just moved to a new phone and your contacts are still sitting in your Google account, WhatsApp won’t see them until Google finishes downloading them. Open your phone’s Contacts app and search for the person. If they aren’t there either, the issue is sync, not WhatsApp.
Go to Settings > Passwords and accounts > Google > Account sync and make sure Contacts is switched on. On Samsung phones the path is Settings > Accounts and backup > Manage accounts, and on some XOS and HiOS builds it sits under Settings > Accounts. Tap Sync now if your build offers it, wait for the contacts to appear in your Contacts app, then refresh WhatsApp. Google’s own Contacts help pages cover what to do if contacts still won’t sync to the phone.
Contacts saved only on an old SIM card are a common Nigerian case. If you saved numbers to the SIM years ago and then moved that SIM into a new phone, some phones don’t show SIM contacts until you import them. Look for Import or Import from SIM in your Contacts app settings and move them to your Google account so they stay safe.
Sometimes the contact isn’t using WhatsApp on that number
If everything on your side checks out, the person may have moved WhatsApp to a new number, deleted their account, or never installed it on the line you saved. Nigerian numbers also get recycled when a SIM stays inactive for a long time, so an old contact’s number can end up with someone who doesn’t use WhatsApp. In the New chat list, people who aren’t on WhatsApp usually appear further down with an Invite option instead of a chat option.
The simplest check is to call or text the person and ask which number their WhatsApp is on. It’s also worth knowing that WhatsApp has been rolling out optional usernames through 2026, which let people chat without sharing their phone number. Someone who connects with you by username won’t appear from your phone book the way a saved number does, so you’d find them by the username they share with you instead.
Contacts saved inside WhatsApp work a little differently
WhatsApp now lets you add a contact from inside the app through New chat > New contact, and on recent versions you can choose to keep that contact in WhatsApp rather than in your phone’s address book. That’s handy for business chats, but it can confuse you later, because the person will show in WhatsApp while missing from your Contacts app, or the other way round after you switch phones.
If you’re missing someone you know you saved, try adding them again through New chat > New contact and check where the save screen says the contact will be stored. Saving it to your Google account keeps it on both the phone and WhatsApp, which is the easiest option if you change phones often.
Battery savers on Tecno and Infinix can stop WhatsApp syncing
XOS and HiOS are strict with background apps, and that can stop WhatsApp from noticing changes to your contacts. Open WhatsApp’s app info page, go to Battery, and set it to Unrestricted or No restrictions, depending on your build. On some Transsion phones you’ll also find an Auto-start or Launch manager where WhatsApp should be allowed to run in the background.

Update WhatsApp and clear its cache if names still won’t load
An outdated WhatsApp version can have contact bugs that were fixed in a later update, so open the Play Store, search for WhatsApp and tap Update if it’s offered. After that, go to Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Storage and tap Clear cache. Clearing the cache removes temporary files only and leaves your chats, photos and account alone.
Don’t tap Clear data or uninstall WhatsApp unless you’ve made a fresh chat backup, because both can wipe chats that aren’t backed up. To back up first, open WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat backup and tap Back up. You’ll rarely need to go that far for a missing contact, though, since the earlier steps fix almost every case.

What to check first if you want the quickest fix
Start with the refresh inside WhatsApp, then confirm the contacts permission, because those two solve most cases. If only one person is missing, open their contact card and fix the number format before anything else. When the contact isn’t in your phone’s Contacts app either, turn your attention to Google sync or SIM contacts, and if everything on your side is fine, check with the person that their WhatsApp is still on that number.
The practical aim isn’t to reset WhatsApp. It’s to make sure the number is saved correctly, stored where WhatsApp can read it, and belongs to someone actually using WhatsApp, and once those three line up, the contact will show.
